Los Angeles is governed by a 15-member City Council, which is connected across the vast area of the city through a number of officially-sanctioned Neighborhood Councils. The Neighborhood Councils are tasked with communicating the needs of the diverse communities that comprise Los Angeles to the City Council. The Los Angeles Police Department, Los Angeles Public Library System and Los Angeles Unified School District are among the largest organizations in the country. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power provides service to city residents and businesses.
